Hi,
In the last months, you have had numerous suggestions to keep it civil
on the mailing list, in the "C++ Enhancements" thread [1,2,3,4,5,6], and
multiple other threads [7,8,9], and by many individuals. Despite that,
you did continue with ad hominems and related belligerent language,
bordering on trolling.
You have therefore been given a 3-month timeout, which will be enforced
by blocking you from sending email to the php.net domain, including
subdomains.
Evading, or attempts to evade, this restriction will result in longer
expulsions.
with kind regards,
Derick Rethans

This message kinda freaked me out until I realized it wasn’t directed at me lol. Couldn’t this have just been sent to the individual privately instead? I really don’t need to see a notification whenever somebody gets themselves temp-banned from the list, just saying.

For me it was the opposite: I appreciate the information that there is such a mechanism for this list and when it is being used.
If this would happen often then I could see an argument for not spamming the list with it but let's hope this remains the exception.

- Chris

I saw the first few lines on my phone and had a similar wtaf reaction. Adding the person’s name in the salutation would help instead of a general “hello”. But otherwise, I think it is healthy for it to be public. Voices silently silenced, even for a good reason, are never a good thing. Also, it gives people a chance to advocate for the banned or object to the banning, if they so choose.

Spot on!
Christoph
Indeed and I very much appreciate the transparency. It was painful to read the insults being hurled around, and though it saddens me that it’s needed, I support action having been taken. I do feel for Derick though, as he (most likely) will now end up getting tirades as a reply to the temp-ban email… (if history is anything to go by)

I agree with Rob. For me, the confusion arose from the fact that the wording of the message (i.e. use of the word “you”) made it look like it was directed at me, the reader.
Maybe we could send out a seperate message to the list instead of just CC’ing the one sent to the person being banned? I.e. something along the lines of, “I have banned [person] from the list for [time] due to [reasons].” A copy of the message sent to the user should definitely be included for transparency, for sure, just not by itself imo.
